Dear Friend of the Institute for Policy Research and Catholic Studies,

It is with profound sorrow that we mark the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, a spiritual shepherd whose witness to the Gospel has touched lives across every continent. His legacy is one of deep compassion, steadfast faith, and unwavering commitment to the dignity of every human person. As Director of this Institute, I join you in mourning the loss of this extraordinary leader.

Pope Francis was a tireless advocate for human rights, religious freedom, and the equality of all people. Through his words and actions, he called the Church and the world to care for the marginalized, to walk humbly with the poor, and to strive for justice rooted in mercy. His voice was one of conscience on the world stage—courageous, clear, and always rooted in the hope born of faith.

At the Institute for Policy Research and Catholic Studies, we are deeply inspired by Pope Francis’ commitment to integral human development and his call for dialogue across faiths and disciplines. His emphasis on mercy, justice, and the common good resonates with our mission within the life of the Catholic Church and our outreach to the worlds of politics, public policy, and research. His leadership challenges us to continue fostering collaboration and to apply rigorous academic research to contemporary questions that lie at the intersection of law, religion, and policy.

In this moment of grief, we also give thanks for the gift of Pope Francis’ life. His example of humble service, his joyful witness, and his embrace of Catholic social teaching continue to shine as a beacon for all who work at the intersection of faith and public life. May his memory be a blessing and a challenge to us all.

With prayers and hope,

David P. Long
